So I was perusing the Internet for some ideas for blogging with elementary school children. I haven't come across too much yet. I did find one site that listed a bunch of blogs by elementary school students, but it seemed like they were more like online journals. I didn't check them all out yet, so maybe there will be something. Here is the link....

The students from this site seem to enjoy the blogging. I haven't found too much with elementary blogs. I wonder if no one thinks to use them, thinks that it is too difficult, or just doesn't know enough about them. If anyone finds any blogs that show more than elementary school children just journaling, please let me know!

I would suggest you try http://www.classroom20.com/. It is an excellent resource and would be a great place to ask for links to blogs like you describe. I think the reason you are having some trouble finding elementary blogs is because many elementary students don't have easy access to computers, and writing in blogs takes a lot of time.

Good job seeking out examples of elementary student blogs, Jenna! As I looked through some of them, I agree with you that they do seem more like journaling. I know that may not really be what a blog is, but it might be a start for kids at this age. I guess it would give them the experience of others reading their writing and commenting on it. I think the deeper writing will come as they grow as writers. As far as the link that is included in the above comment, I found it difficult to easily locate student samples. I'd love to know if anyone is able to find something there or anywhere else.
ReplyDeleteAs a high schoo teacher, I have a lot easier time with something like this. Almost all of them have an "e-mail" address through aol, yahoo, hotmail, or google - and over 50% have a myspace or facebook. I've found that as they get into middle school & beyond, they get much more involved in activities like blogging. As an elementary teacher, you would have to do a lot more "how to blog" type instruction...
